Situated in a prime location at the heart of the University of Nottingham’s Sutton Bonington campus, the newly installed Amenities Building ‘The Barn’ has now been completed.
The project deliverables include providing furniture for a dining hall, bar, common room, graduate centre, faith room and student services.
A key concept for the campus redevelopment is improved legibility through the creation of a central pedestrianised area known as the Boulevard. The area surrounding this route was previously fragmented by car parking and movement along it obstructed by two buildings – the Rushcliffe Restaurant and the Students’ Union. These structures and the original Amenities Building were demolished and replaced by the new building, which amalgamates all the facilities under one roof.
The dining hall is perhaps the most dramatic space within the building, and has the capacity to serve up to 500 campus residents per sitting. The generously proportioned, light-filled double-height room offers a contemporary interpretation of the Medieval Great Hall. As an important focal point where all campus residents can meet and socialise, we worked closely with the architects to provide a range of stylish and practical furniture solutions that complement the aesthetic of the building.
One of our strengths is the ability to fully understand and get involved in the early stages of a project – developing visuals, space plans and product designs, and working in conjunction with a team of architects, structural engineers, cabling contractors, disabled access consultants and experts from a range of other disciplines. Overall, we played a key role in realising the project’s central vision of providing the University with a truly world-class building.
One of Godfrey Syrett’s biggest strengths is in the wide range of furniture options available – along with the added benefit of a bespoke design service.
The provision of a dedicated Account Manager who was supported by a specialist Design Manager also provided added value. The Godfrey Syrett team developed an in-depth understanding of the building and the end user’s needs, helping to ensure that all needs were met without losing sight of both the University and the Architect’s vision.
Overall, the project was a huge success, the end result is fantastic – and we are already engaging with Godfrey Syrett on other key projects.
